One of the most common questions I receive before a session is:

"What should we wear?"

And honestly, it's a great question! The outfits you choose play a huge role in the overall feel of your images. They help tell your story and create visual harmony.

Here are a few of my favorite tips when planning outfits for your next family, maternity, or couples session.

1. Start with Your Outfit First

If you're planning a family session, choose mom's outfit first.

Ladies, start with something you feel comfortable and confident in. Once you've chosen your outfit, coordinating everyone else's becomes much easier.

Instead of matching exactly, aim for complementary colors and textures that work well together.

2. Stick to Soft, Timeless Colours

I recommend choosing soft earth tones, neutrals, muted colours, and denim whenever possible.

These tones photograph beautifully, complement the natural Okanagan landscape, and pair perfectly with my editing style. They also create timeless images you'll love looking back on for years to come.

Think: Cream, beige, camel, olive, rust, sage, dusty blue, soft browns, denim

3. Add Layers & Texture

Texture makes a huge difference in photographs.

Think: Knit sweaters, linen, denim, cotton, flowy dresses, corduroy

These fabrics add movement, depth, and visual interest without distracting from the people in the photo.

4. Avoid Distracting Clothing

There are a few things I generally recommend avoiding: Bold patterns, neon or overly bright colours, large logos or graphics, wearing too much black

These elements tend to pull attention away from the connection between your family and can make images feel less timeless.

5. Your Outfits Help Tell Your Story

The goal isn't to have perfectly matching outfits.

The goal is to create a look that feels natural, comfortable, and authentic to your family.

When you feel confident in what you're wearing, you're able to relax, have fun, and simply enjoy spending time together and that's when the magic happens.

Need Help Deciding?

One of my favourite parts of preparing for your session is helping you plan outfits! If you're ever unsure about colours or coordinating your family's wardrobe, I'm always happy to help.

I want you to feel confident before your session even begins so you can arrive relaxed and ready to make memories.

If you're looking for a Penticton family photographer, Penticton maternity photographer, or Okanagan couples photographer, I'd love to help tell your story.
